Where Do PhDs Work Outside the Academy?

In a recent post on Medium.com, I talk about various industries and positions PhDs are equipped to work in and share some of my favourite (free!) resources for exploring your career. What often slows PhD-holders down in their career transition is a lack of knowledge about the diverse places others in their position have ended up in, and how they’ve gotten there.

Yes, you can work as a historian for Parks Canada, but those positions are rarely open. You can absolutely make a go of it as a freelance journalist, but it might take many years to earn decent income doing so. Sure, you can work as an editor or in a museum, but there are professional pathways into those careers that you may not have, and can’t invest the time or expense in pursuing.

Ok, then what?

    OH GAWD I NEEDED DIS.

Having been working part time outside of academe and feeling wrong/bad/uncommitted as a researcher for doing so, I needed a reminder that first off, lots of us are working to feed ourselves; and second, the chances of ending up as an anthro in a not-so-academic field are pretty high so…. Working outside academe and building on a professional identity in those outside spaces is good! Allows one to feed their ‘food/rent/bills habit’ 🙂
