Single Consultation & Strategy Session

I was going through a horrible experience last year of thinking my department was going to close… The session I had with you (and some of the videos I watched) were incredibly helpful for me. … I applied for a position of Director of Research at the XXX last August. … I was incredibly fortunate that I got this job AND my institution gave me a 1.5 year leave of absence to figure out if I wanted to make this transition permanently. I am making way more money, have an incredible staff that works under me, and I get to determine what research projects will be done… And the job is 100% remote. It is wild. When I met with you, I didn’t think there was an option for me outside of being a professor. But you said that you could see me in a managerial position and that I had time and options. Just hearing this made such a huge difference. I do feel I lucked out that this job and the timing of me wanting to leave my current position perfectly aligned, but you definitely gave me the courage and perspective to not only apply, but take a risk and try something new. Anyway, I just wanted to send you this note of appreciation because the money I spent on our meeting and From PhD to Life was worth every penny. Thank you so much.

Associate Professor, sociology (and now Director of Research at a national nonprofit org in the US)

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me earlier today! It is thanks to people like you that are giving PhD students hope: 1) not only to make it to the other side, but 2) to do our part to make things better for the next generation once we get to the other side of this degree (and to do right by our future students). Thank you for your thoughtful suggestions and the unique book recommendations which will serve as continued motivation for me over the next few months.

PhD student, health sciences

When you just want advice, to strategize with someone uninvolved in your life, or to learn from me.

If you aren’t interested in an on-going coach-client relationship focused on making decisions and taking action, this service is for you.

I’ll ask you where you’re at, where you want to go, and what you’ve already done and are planning on — or at least thinking of — doing. Then, I’ll give you my best advice and information.

If we talk and it turns out you are interested in working together longer-term, I’ll give you a discount on that service.

Single consults are best if you’re

  • exploring careers or early on in the job search process, particularly if you’re feeling stuck or unsure what to do next (or first);
  • newly self-employed, or want to be;
  • struggling to meaningfully network online and need strategies and tactics that will work for you;
  • or considering whether you should apply for or enroll in a PhD program (though note that can’t comment on your application materials; consider working with an admissions consultant for help with applications, once you know you want to do it).

Before hiring me, consider checking out my resources pages. If you have access to career services via your institution, local or provincial/state government, or otherwise, do take advantage. These services may not be tailored for graduate students and PhDs, but you may be able to get a lot of out them even so. And, folks in your own network may be great resources for you, and happy to help you navigate a career transition or job search. If you have specific questions about particular fields, know that you may be better off seeking advice directly from individuals working in your target industry, field, and roles.

My Coaching Philosophy

Coaching helps you move forward in life on your own terms. You set the agenda for each session, and for the overall coaching relationship; my agenda is to keep you true to your values, priorities, and goals. Any suggestions I make are offered in the spirit of learning and to help your self-discovery. Accountability is an important part of coaching, and we will work together to ensure you make and accomplish realistic, relevant, and authentic goals. The point of all this is that you’re in charge, and we’ll work together to identify and reach your goals.

My job as your coach is to facilitate you gaining greater awareness, developing suitable plans, and taking meaningful action to achieve your goals. I will use a variety of coaching tools, and follow a basic structure for our sessions, beginning with setting an agenda and ending with what action you will take next.

Group Coaching

Small group coaching is an incredible experience. I am currently working with a group of women entrepreneurs.

I’ll post here when I have openings available. In the meantime, let me know if you’ve got a group of 4-5 people who are interested in doing this together.
