Hell Reader,
A few days ago I met up with a former client, back then a research associate who wanted to move on to more meaningful work.
Now? He’s doing great, still working with scientists within a university environment, but in much different and personally fulfilling capacity.
Also last week a current postdoc client got a great job offer in their new chosen field, and successfully negotiated a higher salary. Exciting!
Did you know that many of my clients are postdocs, either in the first, second, or third role? Yup. I’ve worked with research associates who’ve spent over a decade in these limited-term, often “soft-money” contracts.
The reality of what these individuals do at work, and the support they get from their PIs and others around them varies enormously.
Some postdoc experiences are incredibly valuable; others function best as an extension of funding while folks figure out their next job.
Too many scientists and other PhDs assume that working as a postdoc is what they are supposed to do after completing their doctorates. They believe that the experience is necessary to later securing the kinds of roles they really want.
I’m sure they’re right, occasionally, depending on the details.
But in general, no, you don’t have to pursue postdoc roles instead of immediately seeking positions that suit you better.
Did you do a postdoc, or are you in this role now? What’s your experience?
Are you a professor who hires and works with postdocs or research associates? (If so, and you’ve got some additional funds burning a hole in your pocket, consider signing them up for the PhD Career Clarity Program! Email me back to learn more.)
If you’re currently completing a PhD or early in your post-PhD career, not loving it, and considering doing a postdoc to reset your trajectory, this podcast will interest you!
It answers the common question: Should you do a postdoc, or head straight for a job in industry?
