Today, a year after graduating and with no intention of returning to academia, I found myself at . . . an academic conference! And no, it wasn’t the annual meeting of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, my old summer conference stomping grounds; instead, I was at Worldviews 2013: Global Trends in Media and Higher Education.
Tonight I’ve lots of ideas swirling around my brain, and am feeling thankful for having met a few of my Twitter contacts (and other interesting folk) IRL. As for the conference itself, one session in particular sticks with me: a panel discussion on journalism training programs. I was struck by similarities between the terrible job market for journalists qua journalists and the academic job market. We know that other fields also have pretty poor records when it comes to graduates getting good jobs.
Mostly, the panellists (Jeffrey Dvorkin, Janice Neil, Rob Steiner) didn’t delve into this issue, spending their time discussing their challenges and successes, and talking about what excites them about their work. The fourth panel member, Adrian Monck, questioned the ethics of providing training for a specific job given the dismal nature of the journalism job market. Toward the end of the session that crucial point made a comeback when three young(er) people in the room, all current or former journalists, raised their concerns. Unfortunately, there wasn’t time for discussion.
I’m fascinated by this because we PhDs know all about the disconnect between educational imperatives and the realities of the job market. It’s all fine and good to improve curricula, enhance the quality and relevance of instruction, and acknowledge the many wonderful skills students learn. But after the diplomas are handed out—after the tuition cheques have cleared—graduates need jobs. Sure, the vast majority will find employment: The vast majority of all Canadians (Americans, etc.) are employed. That’s not good enough, I don’t think.
Is it unethical for programs to focus on discipline-specific skills training and content knowledge and then send graduates off into a world for which they haven’t been prepared? Students may develop skills to help them thrive once employed, but what about skills to get them into suitable jobs in the first place? What responsibility, if any, do universities or departments have to their graduates? In a world-wide economic recession, when “Canadian youth face the risk of chronic unemployment despite being more educated than ever,” do institutions of higher learning need to change their ways? We’re constantly told—and were again today—that we’ve all got to be more entrepreneurial, to take responsibility for managing our careers and marketing ourselves. But who’s teaching us to be that way, do those things?

my phd program had a “professionalization workshop” but it was all about the CV and the job letter – preparing for a career in academia. however, i wouldn’t want “how to be an entrepreneur” to be part of my phd program (i got that in my business undergrad, and frankly, it bored me to tears, driving me back to graduate school to study something with some meat to it!). But of course, there is this need to be practical. i think there should be regular workshops, perhaps a series of them, held a couple of times a year, that prepare students to seek employment outside of the academy. Sitting in a session like that, your first year as a phd, would send a much clearer msg about the prospects for professorships. the charade happening now, with professors training phds for a job they’ll never have, is criminal. also, perhaps phd students should be required to shadow the contingent faculty working at their own university! there’s a buzz killer for you!
Good suggestions! I’d like to think there would be some interest if something formal was put on. Important that professors attend too!
My university offers a workshop called Planning Your Career in Academia – it’s pretty grim! The 3-hour workshop clearly set out the 10-year timeline you’d be looking at as the bare minimum to get a permanent lecturing post. (And that’s in *today’s* circumstances). Unfortunately it’s in a training course for 1st-year PhDs, not MAs or 3rd year BAs, so it seems to be a bit too little too late!
I’ve gone into academia very reluctantly and very aware of the circumstances (but feel a bit stuck here for now due to circumstances beyond my control, long story). Unfortunately I was sick on the day of the Preparing for a Career OUTSIDE Academia workshop 😛
The Chronicle of Higher Education is compiling data on PhD Placement rates and the information/resources that grad programs provide to their students. Their findings will be compelling (I imagine), but until grad program directors across disciplines wake up and realize that placement rates are dismal, it’s likely to be a vicious cycle.
