A select list of resources for clients
My Career Story (Savickas & Hartung workbook)
VIA Character Strengths: The VIA Institute on Character hosts this free survey, developed by psychologists. After you take the assessment, you will receive a ranked list of your character strengths, which are a nice reminder of your authentic self. See also this classification graphic, which lists each strength. Create an account and do the survey here.
See also works, talks, and other resources by Martin Seligman, Tara Brach, Pema Chödrön, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Amy Cuddy, Richard Davidson, Robert Emmons, Barbara Frederickson, Heidi Grant Halvorson, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Timothy Pychyl. Ask me for even more ideas.
If you’re curious, check out Mark L. Savickas’s “Constructing Careers: Actors, Agents, and Authors.” He looks at three different ways of doing “career construction” work with clients. I practice the third way—life design—as opposed to vocational guidance (or career counselling, as it’s often known) and career education (which is what you usually get at a university career centre). Life design! Love this term.
